BMW Engine Trikes: Campagna Motors offers luxury, performance & quality

Part One of a detailed profile of Campagna Motors Trikes

by Ujjwal Dey

The Campagna T-REX is a two-seat, three-wheeled motor vehicle created by the Campagna Motors, located in Quebec, Canada. You have seen lot of advertisements of it lately especially the Daytona racing scene in 2017. Did you know that the T-REX has been commercially available since the early 1990s.

The Campagna T-REX was designed and styled by Deutschman Design. In 1976, 1977 and 1979, Daniel Campagna was a Formula Ford racer in Quebec, Canada. He made some significant motoring inventions, including the Voodoo in 1982. As part of the technical team for Formula 1 racer Gilles Villeneuve, he handcrafted his first model of the T-Rex and subsequently founded his own company, Campagna Moto Sport Inc. in 1990. He brought together a production team and the prototype vehicle was finalized a few years later. From 1994 to 2000, the T-REX was only available in Quebec, but since the early 2000s it has been sold in the rest of Canada and the United States. In June 2004, the company was facing financial difficulties and it granted exclusive worldwide license to manufacture and sell the T-Rex to T-Rex Vehicles Inc. Due to this arrangement, the company claims that production costs have been reduced by 20% without much difficulty.

In 2001 the T-REX entered the U.S. market, including California CARB certification by 2002. However, T-Rex Vehicles Inc. declared bankruptcy in 2008 during the financial meltdown of America. The company's assets were acquired later that year by André Morissette and David Neault of Campagna Motors. Since July, 2009, the company has only 23 employees producing two to three T-Rex vehicles per week. The trike company and model Cirbin V13R was bought by the company, and since 2011 it offered the V13R model.

Though most sales are in Quebec, Canada, their biggest export market has been the Middle-East. The oil rich states of Middle East have a lot of motorsport and adventure sports market including a tourism industry built on 4-wheel drives, all-terrain vehicles, dune buggies and simple old school drag racing.

Today Campagna Motors claims its heritage as Established 1988 with two primary offerings being T-Rex “The Legendary” and V13R “The Roadster”.

BikernetTrikes.com Editor Says:

Riding the T-Rex will make you feel like you own your personal Formula 1 Race Car for everyday city streets and highways, wiht 1.3 G, which is difficult to obtain even in a mainstream production car. It’s just 5 inches from the ground. It is wide, maybe wider than some production cars. Going top gear will push you back in the seats like a rolling rollercoaster through city streets.

This however is not a car. It is a motorcycle. If you have never used a clutch on a motorcycle, you will have a hard time riding a T-Rex. The clutch pedal isn’t exactly the same fine control as on a motorcycle clutch lever, but you get used to it after stalling a few times. This little lightweight monster definitely does not like going any slower than 8000 rpm. Since T-Rex is not a car, it is exempted from having ABS or ESC.

This is not a vehicle for dropping your girlfriend at work, or running errands or buying groceries. This is a RECREATIONAL VEHICLE. If you are not enjoying it, it's probably because you are not using it right. There are no doors on this thing.

It is a real tight and snug fit sitting inside T-Rex. Your ass is just a couple of inches above the road. Your head, without a helmet, is just about inside the roll cage. Unlike a motorcycle, the weight is distributed sideways and shared between the two front wheels. Your pillion is sitting shoulder to shoulder next to you, the driver.

The only modification to the gearbox by Campagna is the addition of a reverse gear.

Basically if you are not a regular motorcycle rider then you will be scared shitless on a T-Rex at full throttle, so close to the road, neighbouring truck wheels and your own bouncing front wheels. According to Campagna, the T-Rex is targeted for a primarily male demographic, age group 30-55 who want sports-car performance but also like to stand out in a crowd. You will attract attention with its unique look and sound.

Indeed, the features in T-Rex are sometimes better than most sports cars available globally. The high revving motorcycle engine with manual gear change on a Formula 1 type of cockpit and seating position will thrill you to no end. No power steering here, you don't need it. While this trike has been on the road under T-Rex brand name for a long while, it has undergone many technical and production upgrades over the years. Yet the basic concept of T-Rex has still remained unchanged.

No matter what your riding or driving background, T-Rex is a unique experience unmatched in speed and control. It is literally a street legal Formula 1 racetrack vehicle.

Starting at $57,999 MSRP, T-Rex The Legendary is the mainstay of the company. Its other, more expensive variants are T-Rex The Ultimate and T-Rex Special Edition. The Legendary weighs 525 KG (1,157 Pounds) with 16 different paint color options to match your style. The High Reving 6-Cylinder Engine is powered by the in-line 6-cylinder engine from BMW. The T-REX 16S has all the power to make you experience an ultimate ride. It delivers a low rpm torque for smooth or brisk acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. This makes the T-REX 16S one of the most fun and exciting rockets to drive. This lean and muscular trike uses lightweight composite materials, hi-tech alloys with lean design and engineering of every component to contribute to create a unique combination of strength, lightness and efficiency. These are shapes that withstand the test of time.

If you did not test drive the Campagna collection at Daytona Beach 2017, then you should book a test drive with a local dealer. The Trike handling is responsive, precise and direct. There is constant road feedback through chirurgical handling and a compliant suspension that makes riding a T-REX like a pro, easy even for your old lady. Electronic control of the engine torque at the touch of a button gives you control on the behavior of the vehicle in any situation.

At this expensive price tag, Campagna Motors promises you there is absolutely no compromise on comfort and design. Ergonomics and comfort are prime design objectives. No compromise between day-to-day driving characteristics and sports performance or racing. Unique leaned driving position combined with an adjustable suspension makes you be one with your T-REX. It is like a Bat-mobile except you don’t have to be a billionaire Bruce Wayne to enjoy it daily.

The wheels are made of light aluminum alloy, giving the T-REX 16S Campagna custom designed wheels. They are of Gunmetal color. These wheels have an 11 spoke race style.

Wheels dimensions:

16” in Front

18” in the Back

Fitted with BF Goodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2 high performance tires, with a W speed rating, the T-REX 16S can handle any surface; wet or dry. You can accelerate faster and get best dry traction vs. the competition on the track for 100% more fun on the street. Cornering can be done harder with more control for precise cornering with 30% better wet and 8% better dry grip.

The T-REX 16S is equipped with performance braking power with its slotted and cross-drilled disc-brakes on all wheels activated with Wilwood 4-piston calipers in front.

The custom coil over spring suspension offers a smooth ride with exciting cornering ability and stability. Preload adjustment allows you adjust your suspension according to the load of the vehicle and your preferences for smooth or firm ride. Because of its chassis design, low center of gravity, suspension and weight distribution, the T-REX can take an incredible 1.3 G lateral acceleration in a curve. With a 92 liters (24G) total capacity, you can take to the road for long trips.

Complete control over all the features of the vehicle is provided through the digital instrument panel. In-display menus for the 180 Watts four speakers Alpine sound system, ride selection, trip info and many other features. Connect your device via Bluetooth, USB, line-in and the 12V plug.

For optimal performance on the road or on the track, the 6-speed gearbox is activated trough a fast shifting sequential pattern. The chain driven final drive transmits the maximum of the power to the rear wheel with virtually no loss of power, for an instant response to your right foot. An electronically activated mechanical reverse gear, custom designed by Campagna, allows you to backup safely on the engine power.

The crash tested tubular steel frame acts as a solid roll-cage and a rigid frame to protect you and your passenger. Standard with 3-point safety belts for on-road use, the T-REX 16S chassis has the mounting points and is ready to accept a 4-point race harness for your occasional track days.

Through its partnership with BMW, Campagna has implemented a function to electronically control the torque delivery of the engine. This gives you the ability to adjust the behavior of the T-REX according to your riding style and road conditions. At the press of a button, you can switch on-the-fly from Rain, Road and Dynamic mode.

Description of the different modes:

§ Rain: full engine power, torque delayed and controllable

§ Road: full engine power in combination with spontaneous throttles response

§ Dynamic: sporty driving on dry roads, full engine power and the engine response is immediate and throttles response more direct

The T-REX 16S upholstery comes standard with black biscayne vinyl fabric. Made with weather resistant and fire retardant material, the seats offer comfort and safety in any temperature.

The T-REX mufflers produce a European exotic sport car sound. The 6-into-2 manifold configuration with integrated catalytic converters ensure the greenest T-REX yet. Lightweight polished stainless steel mufflers are standard equipment. The exhaust system meets USA & Canada environmental standards for noise and pollution (EPA & ARB of California). Available as an option, the Akrapovic exhaust system is made of titanium and carbon fiber components. Lighter and less restrictive than the standard exhaust, it enhances the performance, the looks and the sound of your T-REX. This performance exhaust system is also completely street-legal.

You get a 1 year / 20,000 km Warranty from Campagna.

Accessories such as color-matched carrying cases with secure storage is optional. So is a smoked wind deflector and passenger footrest.
