Three-wheeled Solo electric vehicle motors past Elio on way to market

For years, we've been hearing Elio Motors' plans and seeing its prototypes, to the point that it's only natural to wonder if it'll ever actually make a viable, market-ready vehicle. On the other hand, the similar Electra Meccanica Solo three-wheeler only hit our radar recently this year, but it's already set to beat Elio to market. Canada's Electra made things official, introducing the model and announcing deliveries.

You can secure your Solo today with a 100%-refundable deposit.

The Solo's basic description and primary specs – it's a single-seat, 992-lb (450-kg) three-wheeler with an 82-hp (61-kW) electric motor driving its rear wheel. Range remains at roughly 100 miles (161 km), which continues to look paltry next to the new guard of 200+ mile (322+ km) cars like the Tesla Model 3 and Chevy Bolt. When you take the Solo's super low weight, compact, single-seat design and 0.24 drag coefficient into account, you'd expect it to be leading the pack, not falling quietly into the middle of it. But the Solo does slot in at less than half the price of those other two, so we reckon concessions are going to come somewhere.

The Solo will never be a road-trip vehicle, anyway. Electra Meccanica is quite clear that it's really designed as a single-focus commuter, a supplement to the family car that can tackle the driver's basic everyday transportation needs in a very efficient way.

Beyond range, Electra Meccanica says the 16.1-kWh lithium ion battery and AC synchronous motor combine for speeds of up to 80 mph (129 km/h) and a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint of under eight seconds. That battery charges in three hours at a 220 V charging station or about six with 110 V.

The Solo measures 120 x 47.6 x 50.5 in (3 x 1.2 x 1.3 m, length x front width x height) and sits on a wheelbase of 80.5 in (2 m). Compared to the Elio (with which the Solo is destined to be inextricably linked), it has a fuller, more traditional car-like face with integrated front fenders. Its 15-in aluminum alloy wheels are wrapped in Continental all-season tires measuring 155/60 R15 up front and 175/55 R15 at the rear.

Other Solo equipment includes Wilwood all-wheel disc braking, bi-halogen headlamps, daytime running lights and heated mirrors. The vehicle has 285 liters of cargo space.

The Solo's interior are not of a luxury car, but given that custom coach builder Intermeccanica is one of the forces behind Electra Meccanica, the cabin is more than just an afterthought. It includes an LCD instrument panel, power windows, AM/FM radio with Bluetooth/USB and an adjustable seat. There's also a remote keyless entry, rear-view backup camera, and air conditioning available.

Electra Meccanica is now taking fully refundable deposits for the CAD$19,888 (approx. US$15,100) Solo on its website. Four colors are available: Titanium Silver, Electric Red, Raven Black and Arctic White.

Delivery estimate for a new SOLO reservation is Q4 2018.

Electra Meccanica Vehicles Corp. is dedicated to the design and manufacture of leading edge electric vehicles. Drawing on a 59 year history of designing, building and delivering high end specialty cars, the Company has designed and built the innovative, all-electric SOLO, a single-seater electric vehicle developed to revolutionize the way people commute.

Electra Meccanica has also designed the Tofino, an elegant, high performance electric two seater roadster set for launch in 2019. Both vehicles are tuned for the ultimate driving experience while making commuting more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Company incorporated in 2015 has its stock traded on the OTCQB under the symbol ECCTF. A publicly held company, Electra Meccanica announced its application filing for NASDAQ Capital Markets listing last October.

Intermeccanica, a subsidiary of Electra Meccanica, has successfully been building high-end specialty cars for 59 years.

It All Started in Italy

Frank Reisner began building custom sports cars in Italy in 1959, under the name Intermeccanica. His son Henry later joined him, and together they built 2,500 vehicles with Intermeccanica. Their extensive history in the automobile industry continues today with Meccanica. As Founder and President, Henry Reisner oversees the production of the Solo and brings extensive knowledge about design and performance car manufacturing.

Intermeccanica’s 50 years of experience meets Chairman and CEO Jerry Kroll’s expertise in clean energy and motor racing. Kroll’s passion for racing led him to help drivers like Vancouver’s Greg Moore move up through the ranks and into the big leagues of Indy Car racing. He still races Formula Enterprise cars to this day.

Drifting in the need for thrills on three wheels – Can-Am Spyder

Since first introducing the Can-Am Spyder in 2007, Bombardier continues to tweak this cross between a motorcycle and a car, and what it's done to its F3 model is no exception. The Can-Am Spyder F3-S has what the company is calling a Sports mode feature that allows riders to drift, and is meant to turn riding through twisties into a more exciting experience.

Think of Sports mode in this case as turning off the traction control, rather than making further automatic adjustments to suspension and engine performance, as might be the case on a motorcycle with multiple riding modes.

Drifting is typically associated with oversteering a car to purposely create a loss of rear end traction, which makes the idea of losing traction in the one rear wheel of a Can-Am Spyder seem counter-intuitive. But the Spyder's accompanying Vehicle Stability System (VSS) remains operational in Sport mode and decreases power where appropriate to help prevent rollovers. The result is a more controlled rear tire drift that adds a safety factor to the fun of showing off your steering skills.

Drifting is now part of road racing culture. Drifting on Trikes is also not a new concept. Refer our Feature Article on how to build your own Drift Trike at home.

Motorized Drift Trike : Let’s build one

http://trikes.bikernet.com/pages/Motorized_Drift_Trike__lets_build_one.aspx

Drift trikes aren’t new. They were known as Big Wheels or Green Machines in the 1970s. These featured mechanical tricks you might recognize on modern drift cars like “stick shift” brake handles and absurd steering angles. Fuzzy wristbands, Keds, and sliding sideways on a Big Wheel made for serious street cred in 1976.

So, when you get your hands on a free test ride on a Spyder F3-S, try the drifting. Turn on Sport Mode and feel your adrenaline surge as you tame twisting roads or perform controlled rear tire spins, all while maintaining your balance and peace of mind. It’s Spyder’s most permissive stability system setting yet. Sport-tuned, gas-charged front shocks ensure great performance and comfort on even the most demanding roads.

Motor Trike Announces Trike Kit for 2018 Honda Gold Wing Motorcycle Models

(TROUP, Texas) Motor Trike, Inc. announced the release of its latest trike conversion kit for 2018 Gold Wing models. The Motor Trike “Talon” is an Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) kit, marking the fifth Motor Trike IRS conversion for the range of Gold Wing motorcycles. Motor Trike highlights that the Talon is the exclamation point on an impressive line of trike conversions for the Gold Wing, exemplifying Motor Trike’s commitment to fulfilling its customers’ needs.

The Talon also marks the first time that riders will have options for either an automatic transmission (DCT) or a traditional manual transmission on a trike conversion for their Gold Wing bikes. “This is what you get when you combine the world’s best performing touring motorcycle with the world’s best trike company,” said Motor Trike’s J.D. Vey.

Motor Trike R&D raised its signature engineering standards for the Talon with technical improvements that go hand-in-hand with the new motorcycle’s specifications. However, Motor Trike maintained Gold Wing vehicle systems that it knew riders valued—such as ABS, OEM electronic trunk release, and helmet holder. The company also maintained the OEM saddlebag open indicators but adapted it for the trunk door. Motor Trike emphasized a seamless front-to-back end design, matching body lines to create a conversion kit with forward design elements.

With the launch of the Talon, Motor Trike is now making IRS conversions covering three generations of Gold Wing bikes and 31 model years, offering a trike conversion for all Gold Wing riders. “This is an amazing machine, with both handling and comfort,” said Vey.

Motor Trike is currently taking orders for the Talon at an introductory price of $7,999.99 per conversion kit, for a limited time. All trike kits include Motor Trike’s three-year/60,000-mile warranty.

The Talon is available through Authorized Motor Trike Dealers. Customers may locate their nearest dealers to order:

Tanom Invader three-wheels its way into dream-machine-must-haves

Most of the vehicles Jay Leno has by (and in) his garage have four wheels, or two. But for one of his episodes, the talk show host and car collector rode an Invader made here in the United States by Tanom Motors. We first saw the Invader at SEMA back in 2010 when the company was originally called Talon Motors, and saw it again at the same show a year later. But now it's officially on the market, categorized as a motorcycle.

While trikes can come in a variety of configurations, the Tanom Invader places its Suzuki-sourced Hayabusa motorcycle engine behind a side-by-side two-seat cockpit, driving one giant rear tire instead of the two up front. That makes it different from the Polaris Slingshot (with its front engine/rear drive layout) or the Morgan 3 Wheeler (front engine/rear drive as well), never mind models like the Can-Am Spyder or Piaggio MP3 that fall closer to the motorcycle end of the spectrum, with handlebars (instead of steering wheels) and tandem seats.

What it does resemble – very closely – is the Campagna T-Rex. You can imagine the Invader is a whole lot of fun to drive (or ride) as well.

This enclosed format, with a permanent fixed roof, also currently allows all the Invader models, with the exception of the TR-3, to be driven in 45 States without a helmet; and in States with Autocycle legislation, without a motorcycle endorsement.

The Invader is built with pride in the United States of America.

It is quite a luxury with the base model Invader TC-3 Coupe proposed to be sold at MSRP – $54,899

The top speed depending on the gearing is 135 to 160mph. It can accelerate again depending on gearing, 0 to 60mph in 3.5 to 4 seconds. It requires Premium gasoline as fuel. Invader holds 12.2 gallons of fuel. Weight is at about 1,550 lbs. The Invader is powered with a 196 HP Suzuki Hayabusa 1340cc 4-cyl Engine.

Downside is that for such a premium priced vehicle the company offers only a 2 year Limited Warranty on the chassis, and a 1 year Limited Warranty on all other parts with unlimited mileage.

Purchasing an Invader will still have to wait as Tanom has attended four SEMA dealer only shows and developed a list of over 100 prospective dealers nationwide. Tanom has established its initial flagship dealer, Village Motorsports, in Unionville, Virginia. As Tanom is now expanding production, they wish to add dealers in NC, FL, NV and throughout the United States.

ELIO and the dreams of a Sunshine State

The dream of the dreamers called “Elio Motors” doesn’t seem to fade away even though there is no production which has been postponed year after year to now suggest manufacturing will begin in 2019. The SEC filings suggested doom and losses. The proposed public offering to raise money didn’t get done. The news of expected purchase of common stock by online home décor retailer Overstock.com and the regular newsletters, etc have really been a long tiring wait for customers who booked an Elio for just $ 100 years ago.

As of June 30, 2016 with no updated data posted on Elio website
  • $102M Raised
  • $24.1M Reservations Received
  • $411.6M Potential Orders Represented

Florida is a state that the Elio Motors team knows quite well. The Tour Team has made appearances in Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, Destin, West Palm Beach, Daytona Beach, among others. Elio have enjoyed tremendous crowds at Florida malls and at events like Bike Week and Barrett Jackson. Florida remains high on the list for future visits based on the reception they have received. If you want to know where the next Elio event will take place, you can either sign up for their emails or like their Facebook Page.

The state of Florida has been an early and active supporter of Elio Motors. Out of all 50 States, Florida ranks 3rd in terms of overall reservation holders. Reservation holders span the entire state, from Walnut Hill to Yulee all the way to Key West.

The top three cities of Elio Motors reservation holders in Florida are:

Number 3…Miami!

Number 2…Jacksonville!

Number 1 is…Orlando!

Florida has been a tremendous state for Elio Motors, both in terms of turnout for events and the volume of reservation holders.

Speaking of Florida, Elio Motors have recently made legislative progress in the area. While Elio owners were already good to go in the state, an autocycle definition was recently signed into law.

In a Press Conference in May 2018 at Shreveport, Louisiana, founder Paul Elio had told media that his company had raised more than $110 million. Paul Elio said production vehicles would start rolling off the lines in 76 weeks "plus a few weeks," sometime after October 2019.

Elio Motors would need roughly $376 million to begin production, the company has said publicly. Elio claimed that the company would raise money for production through a cryptocurrency release.

“We need hundreds of millions of dollars,” he said. The cryptocurrency offering should get the company to "cashflow positive," he added.

In April 2018, Overstock.com announced a $2.5 million investment in Elio and said it would help back the company in a cryptocurrency offering that would help raise money to build cars.

ElioCoin Security Token Offering by Elio Motors is to be made with JonesTrading Institutional Services LLC to act as lead placement agent for the STO. Specifically, the ElioCoin STO is expected to be conducted under both Regulation D and Regulation S under the Securities Act of 1933, with initial tokens being sold only to institutional accredited investors. It is expected that the STO will include a pre-sale of the ElioCoin.

“It is our fondest hope that, once issued and cleared for trading, ElioCoin may trade on the blockchain-based securities trading platform that is in development at tZERO,” said Overstock.com CEO and founder Patrick M. Byrne. tZERO is a subsidiary company of Overstock.com.

Overstock.com is a Utah based online retailer which sells a broad range of products at low prices, including furniture, décor, rugs, bedding, and home improvement.

In 2013, taxpayers in Shreveport purchased a shuttered GM facility for $7.5 million and leased it to Elio. The fledgling automaker pledged to employ more than 1,500 workers by 2015, but reported just 28 employees in 2016.

As per Paul Elio in the May press conference, about 150 prototypes will be built between May and October. But he didn't specify how many workers he would need to build those cars. Elio said he was confident that his company could fulfill the 65,000 orders it's received for the three-wheeled cars, but Elio didn't specify when all of those orders would be fulfilled.

Elio Motors fined for operating without a license

JUNE 2018

SHREVEPORT, LA - Elio Motors is fined for operating in Louisiana without the proper license.

A Jefferson Parish Judge fined Elio Motors $38,250 for operating as a recreational products manufacturer in the state without being licensed by the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission for more than 1,530 days. Last year the Louisiana Motor Vehicle Commission fined Elio $545,000 for operating without proper licensing.

The new ruling also orders Elio Motors to pay the fine in 60 days. Elio Motors is also facing an additional fine of $1000 a day if the fine isn't paid.

All these licensing fines by judges for a company which has manufactured nothing and operates not much than its one website with a handful of employees. Elio Motors was founded in 2009 with an initial production date of 2012. But it's been pushed back ever since.

In a comment to KTAL/KMSS Elio Motors said they will appeal. "We strongly disagree with the decision and will appeal" said a company spokesperson.

During a recent visit to Shreveport, Elio Motors CEO Paul Elio said he expects production to start by fall of next year.
